Vaginal Botox Injections
Release Pelvic Floor Pain

Couple

While you may be familiar with weak pelvic floor muscles that lead to urine loss or pelvic organ prolapse, many are not aware that pelvic floor muscles can be TOO tight. This pelvic floor hypertonicity, or levator spasm, can lead to many painful symptoms, including:

  • Vaginal pain

  • Painful intercourse

  • Inability to have penetration

  • Inability to insert a tampon

  • Urinary urgency or frequency

  • Inability to fully empty the bladder

  • Rectal spasms

While pelvic floor therapy is a mainstay in treatment of these over-tightened muscles, for many it is not enough. Injection of a neurotoxin, like BOTOX, into the pelvic floor muscles can bring much-needed relief and make vaginal penetration possible again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does BOTOX INJECTION FOR PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES work?

BOTOX works in the same fashion in all muscles. Once injected, it blocks the nerve signal from reaching the muscle. That means the muscle will soften and relax. Patients with pelvic floor hypertonicity have excess spasm in their pelvic floor, or levator ani muscles, leading to vaginal pain and urinary and rectal symptoms. BOTOX injection into these muscles softens and relaxes them to allow vaginal penetration and relieve bladder and rectal symptoms.

Who is the best candidate for BOTOX INJECTION FOR PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES?

A full exam by a qualified provider is necessary to determine if your pelvic floor muscles are in spasm. If this is the case, then you may benefit from Botox injections into the pelvic floor.

First one of our providers will perform a complete pelvic exam. Some patients are able to have their injections in the office setting. For other patients, the spasm is so great that they will need to go to the outpatient operating room for treatment.

If you are a candidate for in office treatment, a topical numbing cream will be placed into the vagina for about 30 minutes. The BOTOX is then injected into several areas of the tightened vaginal muscles. The entire procedure should just take about 5 minutes.

There is no special preparation before a BOTOX INJECTION FOR PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES treatment. Afterwards, you should avoid putting anything in the vagina for 48 hours. You may experience spotting or light bleeding for a few days.
